New York Police Department Investigating Fatal Brooklyn Garbage Truck Accident Along Butler Street
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (June 30, 2024) – An elderly woman has tragically died after being hit by a garbage truck in Brooklyn along Bond Street.
New York City police officials are saying that the collision took place on Wednesday afternoon. An elderly woman was crossing the street when she was hit by a garbage truck.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victim. The woman was rushed to Brooklyn Methodist Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Authorities are saying that the garbage truck driver is not facing any charges at this time.
Commercial trucks are involved in many fatal collisions every year. According to the IIHS, “A total of 4,764 people died in large truck crashes in 2022. Seventeen percent of these deaths were truck occupants, 66% were occupants of cars and other passenger vehicles, and 16% were pedestrians, bicyclists or motorcyclists.” Truck companies should take a number of measures in order to prevent collisions.
Truck drivers are required to get a commercial license and are held to a high standard in terms of safety. Every truck driver must take measures in order to avoid collisions. This includes driving defensively and continuously scanning the road ahead of them. It also includes checking blind spots before making turns. If a truck driver failed to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of truck accidents often suffer very serious injuries.
Pedestrian accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to involve truck drivers who are not paying adequate attention to the road ahead of them. Part of the problem is that truck drivers are often put under an enormous amount of pressure to complete their deliveries as fast as possible. This inevitably leads to many lapses in terms of safety. When a truck driver is negligent and causes a fatal collision, surviving family members are able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our deepest condolences to the family of the woman who died in this collision. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what happened. Any person who may have additional information should reach out to the NYPD.
