Investigation Underway After Woman Tripped Before Being Hit by CDTA Bus in Albany
ALBANY, NEW YORK (August 11, 2026) – A 66-year-old woman has tragically died in an Albany bus accident by the intersection of New Scotland Avenue and Morris Street.
Albany police officials are saying that the accident occurred on Friday afternoon. The victim reportedly tripped and fell into the street before being run over by a CDTA bus.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the innocent victim. Sadly, she was beyond medical assistance and pronounced dead at the scene of the crash.
The bus involved remained at the scene and its driver cooperated with police. A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing at this time.
Every person operating a motor vehicle in New York has a legal obligation under Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1146 to avoid colliding with any pedestrian. Drivers must slow down and use their horns when necessary. Bus drivers are considered common carriers and are held to a higher standard in terms of safety. They must operate with the prudence and diligence of a very cautious person and do everything within reason to avoid a crash. Multiple pieces of evidence should be considered following any bus accident.
If a bus driver fails to slow down to avoid a pedestrian, they could be liable for the accident under a theory of negligence. Liability for any pedestrian collision could extend beyond the driver determined to be at fault. In particular, the city or private entity that a bus driver worked for can also be liable. Under New York law, employers can be vicariously liable for the negligent conduct of their workers.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the woman who died in this collision. Any person that may have more information should reach out to the police. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong so that other tragedies can be prevented.
