University Hazing

Hazing has become a big problem at colleges across the country. The death of a Florida A&M University drum major last year was national news. And new reports about hazing at sororities and fraternities at Binghamton University, one of New York’s top public colleges, have caused fear and anxiety in students’ friends and families.

Fortunately, victims of hazing and their families can get support from New York injury attorneys like Gersowitz, Libo and Korek.
Last spring, Binghamton terminated all fraternity and sorority pledging after a disturbingly high number of serious hazing complaints. For this new school year, the university has a new dean of students and has renewed its attention on hazing.

Being forced to stand out in the cold in underwear, being prevented from sleeping for prolonged periods of time, and being forced to eat vomit-inducing food are just a few of the initiation rites sorority and fraternity pledges are faced with. A key part of the problem seems to be that some of the responsible organizations are not sanctioned by the university and therefore are not subject to the university’s oversight. A New York personal injury attorney can advise you about your legal rights as a victim of hazing.

According to several reports, some of the hazing continued even after the sororities and fraternities were warned about their practices and even after the university suspended pledging last spring. According to university officials, victims have been reluctant to come forward so allegations are difficult to confirm. Although hazing is a crime in New York, no one at Binghamton has been charged with a crime.
