Source of Fire That Killed Two People and Displaced 90 Others at Plainfield Apartment Complex Remains Under Investigation
PLAINFIELD, NEW JERSEY (December 5, 2025) – Two people have tragically died in a Plainfield apartment complex fire at 308 West Front Street.
Plainfield officials are saying the accident took place around 1:15 a.m. on November 30. Flames could be seen at the top floor of the apartment complex.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene to help all of the victims. Sadly, two people died due to the severe nature of their injuries.
At least two children were also hospitalized. A full investigation into the cause of the fire remains ongoing.
Residential fires remain one of the leading causes of preventable injury and death in the United States. According to the National Fire Protection Association, “In 2024, local fire departments responded to an estimated 1.38 million fires in the United States. These fires caused an estimated 3,920 civilian fire deaths and 11,780 reported civilian fire injuries. The property damage caused by these fires was estimated at $19 billion.” Many different factors could cause a residential fire.
Apartment owners in New Jersey have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. If a property owner has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition with their premises, they must take corrective action. Failing to take action could form the basis of a negligence claim. Apartment owners should take several measures to protect their guests from fires.
The vast majority of apartment fires are preventable. Even if a fire is not preventable, safety measures like functioning smoke alarms can alert residents of impending danger and give them time to move to safety. Any person injured in an apartment fire may be able to pursue damages through a civil claim. Family members of those killed are also able to pursue wrongful death claims.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the families of the people killed in this fire. It is our sincere hope that the victims will be able to make a full recovery. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the authorities.
