Car accidents are a major cause of preventable injury and death across New York and the United States. According to the IIHS, “A total of 40,901 people died in motor vehicle crashes in 2023. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s most recent estimate of the annual economic cost of crashes is $340 billion. Contributing to the death toll are alcohol, speeding, lack of seat belt use and other problematic behaviors. Death rates vary by vehicle type, driver age and sex, and other factors.” Many collisions can be prevented when drivers adhere to basic safety regulations.
Drivers must use caution to avoid hitting other vehicles and fixed objects. They must operate at a safe speed in all traffic conditions. When a driver fails to slow down to avoid a collision, this may be considered negligence. Any person that is injured due to the negligent actions of a driver may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a bodily injury claim.
