Liability For Nassau County School Bus Accidents

School buses are typically very safe for their passengers. But they pose a number of hazards to pedestrians and those in passenger vehicles.  According to the National Safety Council, “School bus-related crashes killed 54 people nationwide in 2020, down by over 50% compared to 2019 according to National Safety Council (NSC) tabulations of data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).” There are many steps that bus drivers should take in order to avoid collisions.

  • Bus drivers should check their blind spots before turning.
  • Bus drivers should be well rested before heading out onto the road.
  • Bus drivers should slow down during periods of inclement weather.

Many collisions are due to drivers that are speeding. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1180, no person shall drive their vehicle at a speed greater than what would be reasonable or safe given the prevailing conditions of the road. If any driver fails to slow down in order to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim.
