Car accidents remain one of the leading causes of preventable injury and death in the United States. According to the NHTSA, “The agency estimates that 40,990 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2023, a decrease of about 3.6% as compared to 42,514 fatalities reported to have occurred in 2022. The fourth quarter of 2023 represents the seventh consecutive quarterly decline in fatalities beginning with the second quarter of 2022.” Drivers should take a number of measures in order to prevent accidents.
A large number of collisions involve speeding drivers. Pursuant to New York Vehicle & Traffic Law § 1180, no person is allowed to operate a motor vehicle faster than what would be prudent or safe given the prevailing conditions of the roadway. If a driver fails to slow down in order to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of car accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
