New Jersey State Police Investigating Fatal Hackensack Semi-Truck Accident Along Route 80 Not Far From Exit 66
HACKENSACK, NEW JERSEY (May 24, 2024) – Two people have tragically died and another two were seriously injured in a Hackensack semi-truck accident along Route 80.
Hackensack police officials are saying the collision took place on Wednesday morning. A semi-truck crossed over the center median and hit an SUV and a box truck before coming to a stop.
The force of the impact caused the semi-truck to burst into flames. Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victims.
A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Thousands of people are killed or seriously injured in semi-truck accidents each year. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2022, 5,837 large trucks were involved in a fatal crash, an 1.8% increase from 2021 and a 49% increase in the last 10 years. The involvement rate per 100 million large-truck miles traveled is up 3% from 2021, and up 24% in the last 10 years.” There are a number of factors that could contribute to a semi-truck accident.
Truck drivers are required to get a commercial license and are held to a high standard in terms of safety. Many truck accidents are due to drivers who make dangerous or illegal maneuvers. Pursuant to New Jersey Vehicle Code 39:4-88, “A vehicle shall normally be driven in the lane nearest the right-hand edge or curb of the roadway when that lane is available for travel, except when overtaking another vehicle or in preparation for a left turn.” If a truck driver crosses into opposing lanes of traffic and hits another vehicle, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important that evidence is properly collected after a truck accident.
The vast majority of truck accidents are completely preventable. They tend to involve truck drivers who are either fatigued or violating some traffic regulations. There could be numerous liable parties for any truck accident. This could include the company that manufactured a truck or its component parts. The family of any person who died in a truck accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our deepest condolences to the families of the people killed in this Hackensack truck accident. There needs to be some accountability for the sake of the victims and their families. This was a tragedy that should have never taken place.
