Thousands of people are killed or seriously injured every year in car accidents. According to the Centers for Disease Control, “Motor vehicle traffic death rates were stable from 1999 to 2006, declined on average by 8% each year from 2006 (14.5 per 100,000) to 2010 (10.7), and then increased from 2010 through 2019 (11.1).” There are a number of common causes of car accidents.
All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1146, all drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians, bicyclists, and domestic animals in the roadway. If a driver fails to slow down in order to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of pedestrian accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
It can be hard to know where to begin after any pedestrian collision. Victims often need to take extensive periods of time away from work. They may also be left with high medical bills.
