Passenger Died Following Struggle Over Bag That Resulted in Fall on Manhattan-Bound Number 3 Train in Brooklyn
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (May 25, 2026) – A train passenger has tragically died after falling in between train cars on a Manhattan-bound number three train in Brooklyn at the New Lots Avenue Station.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 12:45 AM on Tuesday. There was apparently some type of altercation between two people over a stolen bag.
The scuffle caused one person to fall between train cars. Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help that person. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
A person of interest has been interviewed. However, they said that that person was not cooperating.
A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
The MTA has a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. When a property owner has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition on their premises, they must take action. Failing to take action could form the basis of a negligence claim. Property owners should take several actions to prevent MPA riders from becoming crime victims.
Many NYC subway riders have become crime victims over the years. According to NYC Streets Blog, “Overall, there were 2,211 index crimes (murder, rape, robbery, burglary, assault and grand larceny) in the subway in 2024, down from 2,337 in 2023. This occurred at the same time that overall ridership in the subways rose 3.8 percent last year, to close to 1.2 billion rides.” The family of any person killed in an accident may be able to pursue some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the man killed in this incident. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong. Any person who may have more information should reach out to the NYPD.
