Investigation Underway After Inwood Apartment Fire by Vermilyea Avenue and Broadway
MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (May 31, 2026) – Three people tragically died and many others were injured in an Inwood apartment fire near Vermilyea Avenue and Broadway.
New York City officials are saying that the incident took place on Monday. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help all of the victims.
Multiple people could be seen escaping from the building using fire escapes. Firefighters located three people in the apartment who were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Another five people were taken to the hospital in critical condition. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Residential fires remain a major cause of preventable injury in death across New York City. According to the National Fire Protection Association, “In 2019–2023, fire departments in the United States responded to an estimated average of 14,830 reported structure fires in high-rise buildings each year. These fires caused an average of 33 civilian deaths, 439 civilian injuries, and $203 million in direct property damage per year.” There are several factors that could contribute to any apartment fire.
Property owners have a legal obligation to maintain their premises and are reasonably safe condition. This must be done for all persons whose presence is reasonably foreseeable. If a property owner has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition on their property, they must take action. The family of any person killed in an apartment fire may have legal recourse through a wrongful death claim.
