Car accidents remain one of the leading causes of preventable injury and death in the United States. According to the IIHS, “A total of 42,514 people died in motor vehicle crashes in 2022. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s most recent estimate of the annual economic cost of crashes is $340 billion. Contributing to the death toll are alcohol, speeding, lack of seat belt use and other problematic behaviors.” Drivers should take a number of measures in order to avoid collisions.
All drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. According to New York Vehicle and Traffic Law 1129, “The driver of a motor vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicles and the traffic upon and the condition of the highway.” It is important that certain steps be taken after any car accident.
It can be hard to know where to begin after a car accident. Victims of collisions tend to suffer very serious injuries and may need to take long periods of time away from work. Sadly, drivers and their insurance providers will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility if they are involved in a collision. Any person who is injured due to the negligence of another driver may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
