Teenager Killed in Crown Heights Explosion at Apartment

New York Police Department Investigating Fatal Apartment Explosion at Albany Houses

CROWN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN (September 1, 2026) – An 18-year-old man has tragically died in a Crown Heights apartment explosion at the Albany Houses on 162 Troy Ave.

New York City officials are saying that the incident began around 7:04 PM on Friday evening. Firefighters got reports of a major explosion at the property.

They encountered heavy fire and smoke, but were eventually able to extinguish the fire roughly an hour after being called.

Unfortunately, an 18-year-old did not survive his injuries and was pronounced deceased after being taken to Interfaith Medical Center in critical condition.

A full investigation into the cause of the explosion remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Crown Heights Apartment Explosions

Property owners of New York City have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition under New York Multiple Dwelling Law § 78. This necessitates that property owners abide by all fire and building codes. When a property owner has actual or constructive notice that their premises is in an unsafe condition, they must take action. Failing to take action could form the basis of a negligence claim. There are a number of factors that courts will evaluate when determining liability for any residential explosion.

  • They will look at any history of prior complaints about gas, odors, or electrical problems.
  • They will examine building records and maintenance requests.
  • Another important area of consideration is work performed by third-party electricians and maintenance contractors.
  • The source of the explosion is critical in determining who could potentially be responsible.

It can be difficult to know where to begin after any apartment explosion or fire in New York City. Victims are often left with critical injuries and may need to take extended periods of time away from work. Of course, many victims do not survive their injuries. The family of any person killed due to the negligence of a property owner in Brooklyn may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim. Damages in a civil claim can help cover many of the losses associated with the sudden death of a loved one.
