NEW CITY, NEW YORK (August 27, 2024) – A 13-year-old boy was seriously injured in a New City dump truck accident by South Main Street and First Street.
New City police are saying that the collision took place around 2:10 on Wednesday. The bicyclist was headed north on South Main Street when they were hit by a dump truck headed in the same direction.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. He was taken to Westchester Medical Center with critical injuries.
The driver of the dump truck remained at the scene and cooperated with the police. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Dump trucks can weigh substantially more than passenger vehicles. They pose a number of unique hazards to pedestrians and those in smaller vehicles. According to the Engineering News-Record, “Dump truck accidents severe enough that the vehicle had to be towed away rose 9%, hitting 8,206 in 2016, the latest year statistics are available.” Dump truck drivers should take a number of measures in order to avoid hitting pedestrians and cyclists.
All dump truck drivers must exercise a great deal of care in order to avoid collisions. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1146, all drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians, bicyclists, and domestic animals in the roadway. If a dump truck driver fails to slow down in order to avoid hitting a bicyclist, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of truck accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
Many of the injuries associated with dump truck collisions may not be immediately obvious. This is why it is so important for victims to seek medical attention as early as possible. Even if a person’s physical injuries completely heal with time, it is common for people to sustain long-term psychological injuries. Any person injured in a dump truck accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our best wishes to the victim of this New City dump truck collision and his family. It is our hope that he is able to make a full recovery. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong. Any person who may have more information should reach out to the police.
