Wrong-Way Taxi Driver Involved In Queens Fatal Collisions of DoorDash Scooter Rider
QUEENS, NEW YORK (May 31, 2024) – A DoorDash driver on a scooter tragically died in a Queens car accident involving a wrong-way taxi driver off the 59th Street Bridge.
New York City police officials are saying that the accident took place around 11:50 p.m. on Thursday. A Toyota Rav 4 yellow taxi was traveling the wrong way along Northern Boulevard.
That driver collided with a scooter rider working for DoorDash. Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victim.
Despite life-saving measures, the victim later died at the hospital. The taxi driver has been criminally charged with negligent homicide and reckless driving.
Many people are killed or seriously injured in wrong-way collisions every year. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, “Results show that between 2010 and 2018 there were 2,921 fatal wrong-way crashes resulting in 3,885 deaths—an average of 430 deaths per year. Over half of these deaths were wrong-way drivers (52.8%), a small percentage were their passengers (5.7%), while about four in ten (41.1%) were occupants of other vehicles.” There are a number of common causes of car accidents.
All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid hitting other drivers. To that end, drivers must operate their vehicles on the right side of the road, with very limited exceptions. There is a rebuttable presumption of negligence on the part of any driver who hits another vehicle while traveling on the left side of the road. Several steps should be taken after any car accident.
Car accidents are often highly preventable. They are much more likely to take place in urban areas and at night. It is crucial that accident victims understand that they do have rights. The family of any person who died in a car accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our deepest condolences to the family of the person who died in this collision. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the NYPD. This was a preventable tragedy that should have never taken place.
