Suffolk County Police Investigating Motor Vehicle Collision on Sunrise Highway Near Exit 37
WEST BABYLON, NEW YORK (September 3, 2026) – A pedestrian was seriously injured in a West Babylon car accident along the Sunrise Highway between Exit 37 and Exit 38.
Suffolk County Police are saying that the collision occurred around 8:30 PM on August 31. The pedestrian may have been walking when they were hit by a 2014 Kia Optima.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victim. He was transported to the Good Samaritan University Hospital in West Islip with major injuries.
Unfortunately, he was later pronounced deceased at the hospital.
New York law requires that all drivers use reasonable care as they go about their commute. Under New York Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1146, “every driver of a vehicle shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with any bicyclist, pedestrian, or domestic animal upon any roadway and shall give warning by sounding the horn when necessary.” There are a number of ways that a driver may have acted negligently prior to hitting any pedestrian.
If a driver fails to use reasonable care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian, they could be held at fault for any injuries that a pedestrian sustains. Liability for a pedestrian collision could extend to several parties. This is particularly true if a motor vehicle was being used for some type of commercial purpose. Victims are able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim. Damages in a civil claim could help cover lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering.
We at GLK Law extend our best wishes to the pedestrian injured in this West Babylon collision. It is our sincere hope they will be able to make a full recovery. Any person that may have more information about what happened should reach out to the authorities. The number of pedestrian collisions in Suffolk County in recent years remains very concerning.
