CENTER MORICHES, NEW YORK – A 12-year-old girl was seriously injured in a Center Moriches car accident while crossing Main Street.
Long Island police officials are saying that the accident took place around 3:05 PM on Thursday. The girl was crossing the street when she was hit by a 2015 Jeep Wrangler.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the injured girl. She was airlifted to Stony Brook University Hospital with serious injuries.
The driver of the Jeep remained at the scene and cooperated with police.
Pedestrian accidents result in many preventable injuries and deaths every year. According to Injury Prevention, “Every year, there are about 5000 pedestrian deaths in the US and about 200 in NYC due to MVCs (table 1). From 1998 to 2002, pedestrians comprised 48% of all MVC deaths in NYC (887 of 1849) compared with 12% of MVC deaths nationally (24 682 of 210 364).” It is important that certain actions are taken after any pedestrian collision.
All medical records related to the injury should be preserved.
The police report created after the accident should be sought.
The insurance information of the driver involved should be reviewed.
Pedestrians should consider their options with an experienced attorney.
When drivers failed to slow down to avoid hitting pedestrians in the roadway, this could be used as evidence of negligence. Even when drivers are in the middle of the road, drivers must still use caution to avoid hitting them. Victims of pedestrian accidents are able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim.
We at GLK Law extend our best wishes to the girl injured in this Center Moriches car accident and her family. Any person who may have more information should reach out to the police. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong.
