Driver Arrested Following Fatal West Islip DUI Collision on Robert Moses Causeway
WEST ISLIP, NEW YORK (June 30, 2026) – A pedestrian has tragically died in a West Islip car accident along the Robert Moses Causeway.
New York State Police are saying that the accident took place around 1:38 PM on Thursday. Authorities received reports of an unconscious man by the shoulder of Exit RM2.
Sadly, that pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash. Following an investigation, it was later determined that a driver in a 2012 Jeep allegedly struck the victim.
That driver has since been arrested and charged with driving under the influence. A full investigation into the crash remains ongoing at this time.
Driver intoxication remains a major cause of preventable car accidents. A large portion of the victims are innocent pedestrians. According to the NHTSA, “Every day, about 32 people in the United States die in drunk-driving crashes — that’s one person every 44 minutes.” Even modest amounts of alcohol can substantially impair a person’s ability to operate their vehicle in a safe manner.
If a driver hits a pedestrian while under the influence of alcohol, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Of course, an intoxicated driver could also face criminal liability for their actions. There is simply no excuse for any person to get behind the wheel of a vehicle while intoxicated. The family of any pedestrian who died in a car accident is able to seek some measure of accountability and justice through a civil action.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the pedestrian killed in this crash. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. This was a preventable tragedy that should’ve never taken place. There needs to be strict consequences for any person who causes a fatal accident while under the influence.
