Investigation Underway After Female Pedestrian Died in Collision With Ambulance Making Left Turn
MIDWOOD, BROOKLYN (July 6, 2026) – A woman has tragically died in a Midwood, Brooklyn car accident involving an ambulance near the intersection of Avenue O and Ocean Avenue.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place early Thursday morning. The ambulance was apparently making a left turn when it collided with a female pedestrian.
The driver of the ambulance did not stop at the scene of the crash. Detectives believe that the ambulance driver may not have realized that they hit a pedestrian.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help the injured woman. Sadly, she was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
A number of people are seriously injured or killed every year in preventable accidents involving emergency vehicles. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2024, 225 people died in crashes involving emergency vehicles. More than half of these deaths were occupants of non-emergency vehicles (56%). Deaths among pedestrians accounted for 24% of the total, while emergency vehicle drivers represented 9%, and emergency vehicle passengers accounted for about 8% of the deaths.” There are several factors that could contribute to any pedestrian accident.
Ambulance drivers are allowed to perform a number of maneuvers that would otherwise be risky. But this must be done while an ambulance driver is en route to an actual emergency with their lights and sirens on. When an ambulance does not have its lights and sirens on, its driver must obey all traffic regulations as with any other vehicle. Even if a vehicle is in the midst of an emergency trip, ambulance drivers could still be liable for a pedestrian accident if they operated with a reckless disregard for the safety of the public.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the woman killed in this crash. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what happened. Any person that may have more information should reach out to the NYPD.
