Suffolk County Police Investigating Deadly Car Accident Involving Pickup Truck on Flanders Road by Oak Avenue
FLANDERS, NEW YORK (September 1, 2026) – A man has tragically died in a Flanders truck accident near the intersection of Flanders Road and Oak Avenue.
Suffolk County officials are saying that the incident occurred around 1:30 AM on Sunday. The male pedestrian was attempting to cross the road when he was hit by a 2016 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the victim. He was transported to Peconic Bay Medical Center in critical condition.
Unfortunately, he was pronounced deceased at the hospital. A full investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing.
Every person operating a motor vehicle in New York has a legal obligation to use caution to avoid colliding with any pedestrian that they encounter. Pursuant to New York Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1146, drivers must slow down and use their horn when necessary to avoid hitting any pedestrian. They must be particularly cautious around any child or obviously confused person. Courts will take into consideration many different items when evaluating liability for a traffic accident.
If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with any pedestrian in the roadway, they could be held legally responsible for any resulting injuries. Depending on the unique facts of any case, liability could extend beyond one driver determined to be at fault. Consider, for example, Liying Qian v. Eggens, 245 A.D.3d 809 (2026). A pedestrian was struck by a police vehicle that was making a prohibited left turn in Queens. In that case, the court explained that questions related to the position of a pedestrian in or outside of a crosswalk are separate from whether or not a driver may have acted negligently.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the pedestrian killed in this collision. Any person that may have more information should reach out to the police. It is our sincere hope that there is a thorough investigation that answers all of the relevant safety questions that need to be addressed.
