New York State Police Investigating Elma Hit-And-Run Collision Along Transit Road
ELMA, NEW YORK (January 20, 2023) – A pedestrian has tragically died in a hit-and-run collision along Transit Road not far from Clinton Street.
Elma police officials are saying that the accident took place around 9:10 p.m. on Monday. A pedestrian was walking along the road when they were hit by a vehicle.
The driver of the vehicle did not remain at the scene and is currently being sought by police. Authorities believe that the vehicle involved was a white 2008-2016 Dodge or Chrysler van.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. Despite life-saving measures, the pedestrian died due to their injuries.
Thousands of pedestrians are killed or seriously injured every year in hit-and-run accidents. According to the AAA Foundation, “In 2016, there were 1,980 fatal hit-and-run crashes resulting in 2,049 fatalities. This is the highest annual number of hit-and-run fatalities or crashes recorded since NHTSA began compiling statistics on fatal motor vehicle crashes in 1975.” There are a number of factors that could contribute to a hit-and-run collision.
It is illegal to flee the scene of any injury collision. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian they could also face civil liability. It is important that evidence is properly preserved after any collision. Evidence is what will ultimately be used to determine liability regardless of what any person claims. The family of any person that died in a pedestrian collision may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
