Investigation Underway After Man Killed in East New York, Brooklyn Pedestrian Accident With Garbage Truck on Stanley Avenue
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (July 15, 2026) – A pedestrian has tragically died in an East New York garbage truck accident along Stanley Avenue.
New York City officials are saying the collision occurred shortly before 5:00 AM on Wednesday. A garbage truck was reportedly backing into a building when it collided with a man who was standing inside the building.
Authorities believe that the victim fell before the garbage truck rolled over him. Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the victim.
He was transported to One Brooklyn Health-Brookdale Hospital Medical Center in critical condition. Unfortunately, he was pronounced deceased at the hospital.
Garbage truck drivers must obtain a commercial license and are expected to operate with an abundance of caution to avoid hitting any pedestrian in the roadway. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1146, “every driver of a vehicle shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with any bicyclist, pedestrian, or domestic animal upon any roadway and shall give warning by sounding the horn when necessary.” There are several measures that garbage truck drivers should take to avoid pedestrians.
If a garbage truck driver does not use reasonable caution to avoid hitting any pedestrian on the roadway, this could be construed as negligence. The garbage truck driver involved could be held liable through a civil claim. Liability may also flow to the company that employed the negligent garbage truck driver. As a general rule, employers can be held vicariously liable for the negligent conduct of their employees who are working within the course and scope of their job duties.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the man who was killed in this East New York garbage truck accident. Any person that may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. It is our sincere hope that there is a thorough investigation into what went wrong so that steps can be taken to prevent other tragedies.
