Sanitation Driver Charged With Failure to Yield After a Woman Is Killed Crossing at Bay Parkway and Cropsey Avenue, One of Brooklyn’s Most Dangerous Intersections
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (November 7, 2026) – A 30-year-old pedestrian was killed in a sanitation truck accident at the intersection of Bay Parkway and Cropsey Avenue in Brooklyn.
Kings County officials are saying that the crash occurred around 6:35 p.m. on Wednesday, October 28. The woman was crossing Bay Parkway from Bensonhurst Park toward the southeast corner when a Department of Sanitation truck heading east on Cropsey Avenue turned right onto Bay Parkway.
The victim was thrown to the ground and received serious injuries. Paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help the injured victim. She was rushed to NYU Langone Hospital Brooklyn to receive treatment for critical injuries.
Sadly, she was later pronounced deceased at the hospital. A full investigation of the crash remains ongoing.
Pedestrians crossing with the right of way have strong legal protection in New York City. According to New York Vehicle Code 1146, “every driver of a vehicle shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with any bicyclist, pedestrian, or domestic animal upon any roadway and shall give warning by sounding the horn when necessary.” It is important that several actions are taken after any garbage truck accident in New York.
Pedestrians have a relatively small profile and are more susceptible to the hazards posed by motor vehicles. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 7,314 pedestrians were killed in U.S. traffic crashes in 2023, and 77 percent of those deaths happened in the dark. There were 85 pedestrian fatalities that same year in New York City alone. The family of any person killed in a pedestrian collision is able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
We at GLK Law offer our deepest condolences to the family of the young woman killed at Bay Parkway and Cropsey Avenue. We hope her death leads to accountability and to the safety upgrades advocates have long sought at this intersection. This crash raises a number of important safety concerns that need to be addressed.
