43-Year-Old Pedestrian Critically Injured When an MTA Bus Strikes Him on Webster Avenue Near East 171st Street
MORRISANIA, NEW YORK (November 4, 2026) – A 43-year-old pedestrian was critically injured in an MTA bus accident on Webster Avenue in Morrisania.
Bronx County officials are saying that the crash occurred during the early morning hours on Sunday. A bus driver was heading northbound on Webster Avenue near East 171st Street when that driver reportedly struck a pedestrian.
First responders were called to the scene of the accident to help the man who sustained major injuries. He was transported to Saint Barnabas Hospital in critical condition.
The bus driver remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities. No charges have been filed at this time. Webster Avenue does have a history of similar bus accidents. In particular, a seven-year-old boy tragically died in 2018 after being hit by a bus while riding a scooter.
Bus operators must follow the same core safety duties as every other driver on the road. Under Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1146, drivers must exercise due care to avoid colliding with any pedestrian on any roadway and must sound the horn when necessary. This duty extends to any person that is crossing in a crosswalk. Even if a pedestrian is outside of a crosswalk, this does not remove a bus driver’s duty of care to slow down and avoid hitting someone. Several steps should be taken after any New York bus accident.
Bus companies are considered common carriers and are expected to operate under a heightened standard. They can be responsible for even the slightest negligence. Liability for a bus collision can also extend to several entities beyond any bus driver that was involved. This includes whatever private corporation or municipal entity that hired a bus driver. Victims of bus accidents are able to pursue some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim.
We at GLK Law wish the 43-year-old man injured on Webster Avenue a full recovery. We hope this crash leads the MTA to take a closer look at how its buses operate along Webster Avenue in the overnight and early morning hours. This collision raises many important safety issues that need to be addressed.
