Operation Hardhat Will Continue Until November in an Effort to Provide More Protection to Highway Construction Workers

Construction is one of the most dangerous jobs because of the high risk for accidents among workers. Constructions sites are generally unstable by nature. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, more than one-quarter of construction workers have been injured on the job. Highway construction workers have one of the highest rates of fatality among all categories of construction workers. Most of these deaths are caused by reckless drivers.

The New York State Police and the New York State Department of Transportation have joined forces to create “Operation Hard Hat” in an attempt to crack down on reckless drivers in highway construction zone areas. During “Operation Hard Hat,” which runs during the months of May to November, NY State Troopers dress as highway workers station in active work zones to target drivers failing to follow posted work zone speed limits and other restrictions.

According to Gov. Cuomo, so far this year, 37 operations have been conducted on New York State highways resulting in a total of 1,048 tickets: 432 speeding tickets, 112 seatbelt tickets, 192 cell phone tickets, 68 move over tickets, 2 failure to obey flagger tickets, 10 failure to obey traffic control device tickets, 1 DWI violation, 2 unsafe lane change tickets and 403 tickets for other violations.
