Pedestrian Died Following Collision With Long Island Rail Road Train Heading From Hunterspoint Avenue to Montauk
SAYVILLE, NEW YORK (July 9, 2026) – A 45-year-old man has tragically died in a Long Island Rail Road train accident by the Sayville train station.
Long Island police officials are saying that the incident occurred around 6:15 PM on Wednesday evening. A Long Island Rail Road Train was heading from Hunterspoint Avenue to Montauk and carrying over 600 passengers when it was involved in the collision with a pedestrian.
Paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help the injured victim. Unfortunately, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
A full investigation into the circumstances leading up to the crash remains ongoing.
Trains cross busy populated areas at all times of the day and night. This inevitably leads to collisions with pedestrians. According to the National Safety Council, “Railroad deaths totaled 954 in 2024, a 1% decrease from the 2023 revised total of 967. Nonfatal injuries totaled 6,542, a 3% decrease from the 2023 revised total of 6,768. From 2023 to 2024, fatalities at highway-rail crossings increased 7%, while fatalities involving other types of incidents decreased 4%.” Train conductors should take several actions to avoid hitting pedestrians.
If a train operator does not slow down to avoid colliding with a pedestrian on the tracks ahead of them, this may be the result of negligence. Even if a pedestrian is stationary on a set of train tracks, this does not give train conductors a license to hit them. Train conductors must reduce their speed and take reasonable measures to avoid colliding with pedestrians. A train accident attorney can examine the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the pedestrian killed in this collision. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. It is our sincere hope that measures are taken to help prevent other tragedies at this location.
