Investigation Underway After Officer Injured In Staten Island Hit-And-Run Collision Along West Shore Expressway

STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK (July 18, 20224) – A police officer was injured in a Staten Island hit-and-run car accident along the West Shore Expressway.

New York City police officials are saying that the incident took place around 8:35 a.m. on Thursday. A marked patrol vehicle was rear-ended by a sedan.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the collision in order to help the victim. The officer was taken to the hospital in stable condition.

One driver has been arrested on charges of hit-and-run following the collision. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability For New York City Car Accidents

Hit-and-run collisions remain quite common across New York and the United States. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, “The current analysis found that both the rates of hit-and-run crashes and fatalities are increasing. There were an estimated 737,100 hit-and-run crashes in 2015 (NHTSA, 2016). This translates to a hit-and-run crash happening somewhere in the U.S. every 43 seconds.” There are a number of common causes of car accidents.

  • Speeding
  • Distracted driving
  • Inclement weather
  • Poor road conditions

Speeding remains one of the most common causes of collisions. Pursuant to New York Vehicle & Traffic Law § 1180, no person is allowed to operate a motor vehicle faster than what would be prudent or safe given the prevailing conditions of the roadway. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with a vehicle, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Several steps should be taken after any car accident.

  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • Medical records should be preserved.
  • Surveillance footage should be sought.
  • A thorough investigation should be conducted.

There is simply no excuse for a driver to hit a vehicle in their own lane of travel. These types of accidents tend to happen when drivers are distracted or traveling too fast for the prevailing conditions. Any person injured in a car accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A personal injury attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
