One Killed, Two Injured in Chinatown, Manhattan Truck Accident at Bowery Street

Large Truck Carrying Pallets of Wood Involved in Fatal Chinatown Collision After Driving onto Sidewalk

CHINATOWN, MANHATTAN (September 14, 2026) – One person has tragically died and two people were injured in a Chinatown truck accident near the intersection of Bowery Street and Canal Street.

New York City officials are saying that the collision occurred around 10:20 AM on Thursday morning. A large truck carrying pallets of wood reportedly made a right turn before entering the sidewalk and hitting three pedestrians.

The truck also rear-ended a van along Bowery Street. Paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help the victim.

Tragically, one person died due to the severe nature of their injuries. Two other female victims were reportedly hospitalized and in stable condition.

The driver of the van was also hospitalized. A full investigation remains ongoing.

Liability for Chinatown Truck Accidents

New York drivers have a duty to protect pedestrians and other drivers from foreseeable sources of harm. To that end, they must exercise due care and maintain a reasonable speed at all points in time. Under New York Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1146(a), “Notwithstanding the provisions of any other law to the contrary, every driver of a vehicle shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with any bicyclist, pedestrian, or domestic animal upon any roadway and shall give warning by sounding the horn when necessary.” There are many different factors that could contribute to any truck accident.

  • Many of these collisions involve drivers that are speeding.
  • Truck drivers may fail to check their blind spots before initiating the turn.
  • A large portion of pedestrian collisions involve intoxicated drivers.
  • Truck accidents are more likely to happen in the early morning and late evening hours when visibility is reduced.

If a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting any pedestrian on the roadway, this could be construed as negligence. There’s a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that goes onto a sidewalk and hits a pedestrian. These types of collisions are nearly always the fault of drivers that are committing one or more traffic infractions. The family of any person who died due to the negligent actions of a truck driver is able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
