Nurse Killed in Hit-And-Run Car Accident in Brooklyn

Community Members Call for Safety Improvement After Young Nurse Killed in Brooklyn Hit-And-Run Collision

SUNSET PARK, BROOKLYN (September 1, 2026) – A 28-year-old registered nurse at NYU Langone Brooklyn Hospital has tragically died in a Brooklyn hit-and-run car accident while crossing Third Avenue and Sunset Park.

New York City officials are saying that the collision occurred over the weekend. The victim was coming home after finishing work when she was hit by a speeding Cadillac.

Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victim. Unfortunately, she was later pronounced deceased due to the severity of her injuries.

Members of a local nonprofit are calling for safety improvements in the area after the tragedy. The mayor has said the city plans to redesign Third Avenue, which is widely considered dangerous by many local residents.

Liability for Sunset Park Car Accidents

Any person operating a motor vehicle in New York City must maintain their vehicle at a reasonable speed and exercise due care to avoid hitting any pedestrian. New York Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1111 requires drivers to yield to people that are lawfully within an intersection when any traffic signal applies. There are many different ways that a driver may have acted negligently prior to any pedestrian collision.

  • A driver may have been intoxicated through their use of drugs or alcohol.
  • A driver may have been traveling at an unsafe speed given the prevailing conditions.
  • A driver may have failed to properly scan the road ahead of them for pedestrians or other hazards.
  • A driver may have been distracted by looking at their cellphone or paying attention to some other objects.

If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with any pedestrian in the roadway, this could be construed as negligence. Depending on the specific facts of any case, liability for a pedestrian accident could extend to other parties. For example, a city could potentially be liable for a pedestrian accident if a roadway was in a dangerous condition at the time of a crash.

Investigating Sunset Park Car Accidents

We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the nurse killed in this collision. This was a preventable tragedy that should’ve never taken place. The mayor and other city officials should strongly consider what safety improvements can be performed to make this stretch of road safer. It has been widely understood for a long time that Third Avenue composes a unique safety hazard to pedestrians.
