Nine North Babylon High School Students Injured In Long Island School Bus Crash

Investigation Underway After 9 Students From North Babylon High School Winter Track Team Injured In Long Island School Bus Accident

NORTH BABYLON, NEW YORK (December 5, 2024) – At least nine students from North Babylon High School were injured in a Long Island school bus accident.

Long Island officials are saying that the incident took place around 10:00 a.m. on Sunday. The bus driver was apparently transporting students to a track-and-field meet.

There were about 30 people on the school bus when it crashed into a pole. Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victims.

A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for North Babylon School Bus Accidents

Car accidents remain one of the leading sources of preventable injury and death in the United States. According to the IIHS, “There were 42,514 deaths from motor vehicle crashes in the United States in 2022. This corresponds to 12.8 deaths per 100,000 people and 1.33 deaths per 100 million miles traveled. The fatality rate per 100,000 people ranged from 4.8 in the District of Columbia and Rhode Island to 23.9 in Mississippi.” There are a number of reasons that school buses can be particularly dangerous.

  • School buses are top heavy and much more likely to roll over.
  • School buses have large blind spots that can obscure the presence of other vehicles.
  • School buses weigh substantially more than passenger vehicles.

School bus drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid injuring occupants. They must operate their vehicle at a safe speed at all times. They must also slow down in order to avoid a collision. There is a rebuttable presumption of negligence on the part of any bus driver that collided with a fixed object. Victims of school bus accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Organ damage

The vast majority of school bus accidents are preventable. They tend to take place when bus drivers are distracted, speeding, or committing other traffic infractions. Sadly, though, school districts will often do everything in their power to deny responsibility when their driver is involved in a collision. Any person injured in a car accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
