Multiple Students Injured in Staten Island School Bus Collision

Six Students Hospitalized After School Bus Involved In Collision on Staten Island Expressway Near Slosson Avenue

STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK (August 1, 2026) – At least six students were injured in a Staten Island school bus accident on the Staten Island Expressway near Slosson Avenue.

New York City officials are saying that the incident occurred around 1:35 PM on Monday. A school bus was heading down the Staten Island Expressway when it was involved in a collision with another vehicle.

Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the crash to help all of the victims. At least six students were transported to the hospital to receive treatment.

Photos of the accident site showed the school bus with major front-end damage. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for Staten Island School Bus Accidents

School buses are considered common carriers and must operate within an abundance of caution to avoid causing accidents. This requires that bus drivers maintain a safe speed and follow distance with all vehicles ahead of them. Pursuant to NY Veh & Traf L § 1129, “The driver of a motor vehicle shall not follow another vehicle more closely than is reasonable and prudent, having due regard for the speed of such vehicles and the traffic upon and the condition of the highway.” Victims of school bus accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Organ damage

If a school bus driver fails to slow down and hits another vehicle in their own lane of traffic, this could serve as evidence of negligence. There is a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that rear-ends a vehicle in their own lane of travel. These types of accidents are nearly always the consequence of drivers traveling too fast or following vehicles too closely. Depending on the unique facts of any case, the company that a school bus driver worked for could also be liable for a collision.
