Liability for Queens MTA Bus Accidents

Crashes involving MTA buses in New York City remain quite common. According to one report from the New York Post, “At least 2,520 people — or 2.7 per day — were injured [from 2015 – 2018], according to the MTA. At least 14 people died, including a 25-year-old skateboarder, a 62-year-old pedestrian, a 60-year-old motorist and a 70-year-old with a walker who was mutilated by a hit-and-run bus.” Many factors could contribute to any bus accident.

  • Bus accidents are more likely to occur at intersections.
  • Bus accidents tend to involve at least one driver who was speeding.
  • Bus accidents often occur because bus drivers fail to check their blind spots.

Bus companies are considered common carriers. Their drivers must exercise a great deal of care to avoid causing injury to their passengers. This necessitates that they travel at a safe speed at all times. If a bus driver fails to slow down to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is essential that certain steps are taken after any bus accident.

Bus collisions can leave victims with traumatic injuries and high medical bills. Many victims may need to take extensive periods of time away from work. This can make an otherwise difficult situation even harder. It is important that victims understand that they do have legal options. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a bodily injury claim.
