MTA Worker Injured in Accident at Canal Street Station

MTA Worker Burned After Getting Hit By Spark That Came From Passing Train at Canal Street Station

MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (October 24, 2026) – An MTA worker was hospitalized with burn injuries after an accident that occurred involving a passing train at the Canal Street Station.

New York City officials are saying that the incident occurred on Friday evening. The MTA worker was reportedly taking a photo of a chair on the R/W track.

She was hit by some type of spark from a passing train that caused her to suffer burn injuries below her waist. She was transported to a local area hospital to receive treatment.

Liability for Accidents Involving MTA Workers

Employers in New York have a legal obligation to protect their workers from reasonably foreseeable sources of harm. This necessitates that worksites are kept in a safe condition. According to New York Labor Law § 200, “All places to which this chapter applies shall be so constructed, equipped, arranged, operated and conducted as to provide reasonable and adequate protection to the lives, health and safety of all persons employed therein or lawfully frequenting such places.” Courts will take into consideration several factors when evaluating liability for any workplace accident.

  • Workplace Control:They will consider who controlled the workplace or was otherwise responsible for safety.
  • Dangerous Conditions:They will consider the presence of any dangerous condition at the site that may have contributed to an accident.
  • Prior Incidents:They will consider the history of similar incidents that happened at the site.
  • Equipment Maintenance:They will consider whether equipment at the site was routinely inspected and maintained.

When a worker is injured or killed in New York, they will normally have access to workers’ compensation. This is a no-fault insurance scheme. They may also be able to pursue damages if the case falls under one of the statutory exceptions set out by New York’s labor laws. Injured workers may be able to receive compensation for lost wages, medical bills, and pain and suffering. There are, however, statutes of limitations associated with being able to file civil claims.
