BUSHWICK, NEW YORK (August 20, 2024) – A motorcyclist has tragically died in a Bushwick, Brooklyn semi-truck accident on Scott Avenue.

New York City police are saying that the collision took place around 9:00 a.m. on Tuesday. A motorcyclist was heading down the road when they were hit by a truck under uncertain conditions.

Liability For Brooklyn Motorcycle Accidents

Motorcyclists lack the protection of enclosed vehicles and are more likely to be seriously injured in the event of a crash. According to the National Safety Council, “Although motorcycles make up only 3% of all registered vehicles and 0.7% of all vehicle miles traveled in the United States, motorcyclists accounted for 14.6% of all traffic fatalities and 3.5% of all injuries in 2022. A factor that directly influences motorcycle fatality trends is helmet use.” Drivers should take several steps in order to avoid hitting motorcyclists.

  • Drivers should check their blind spots before making turns.
  • Drivers should slow down during periods of inclement weather.
  • Drivers should be well rested before heading out onto the road.

Commercial trucks can weigh as much as 80,000 lbs and pose a number of safety concerns for those in smaller vehicles. Truck drivers must do everything within reason to avoid causing collisions. If a truck driver fails to slow down in order to avoid hitting a motorcyclist, this could form the basis of a civil claim. Victims of truck accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Organ damage

Most vehicle collisions are completely preventable. They tend to involve drivers who are either speeding, distracted, or otherwise fail to obey traffic regulations. It is important that victims of car accidents understand that they do have rights. The family of any person who died in a motorcycle accident may have legal recourse through a civil claim.
