Moped Victim Taken to NYC Health + Hospitals in Serious Condition After Bushwick Garbage Truck Collision on Flatbush Avenue and Bushwick Avenue
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (June 15, 2025) – A 26-year-old moped rider was critically injured in a Bushwick garbage truck accident by Flatbush Avenue and Bushwick Avenue.
New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 9:30 AM on Saturday. A 26-year-old man was riding a moped when he was struck by a Department of Sanitation truck making a right turn onto Bushwick Avenue.
Paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. He was transported to NYC Health + Hospitals with major injuries.
The circumstances leading up to the collision remain under investigation.
Garbage trucks can be extremely dangerous for pedestrians and those riding micro-mobility devices. According to the New York City Department of Citywide Administrative Services, “Commercial garbage trucks were involved in at least 43 fatalities and 107 injuries in New York City from January 2010 through May 2019, the period examined in this report. The report examined the root causes of these crashes and identified steps to address the problem.” Garbage truck drivers should take several measures to avoid collisions.
Garbage truck operators must acquire a commercial license and are held to a high standard in terms of safety. They must operate with an abundance of caution in order to avoid causing accidents. A garbage truck driver may only make a right or left turn in the roadway until such a movement can be made with reasonable safety. If a garbage truck driver fails to observe traffic laws and this leads to a collision, they could be liable through a civil claim. Victims of semi-truck accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.
It can be hard to know where to begin after any serious garbage truck accident. Many victims will need to take extensive periods of time off of work. They may be burdened with high medical bills and lingering injuries that impact their quality of life. Unfortunately, garbage truck companies and their insurance providers will often do everything in their power to avoid liability for collisions. Any person injured in a garbage truck accident may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim.
We at GLK Law extend our best wishes to the moped rider injured in this Bushwick garbage truck accident. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong.
