Victim Reportedly Had His Bag Caught on Subway Train Door Before Being Dragged During Monday Evening Rush Hour
MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (October 2, 2026) – A 57-year-old man has tragically died in a New York City subway train accident at a Brooklyn subway station.
New York City officials are saying that the incident occurred around 6:00 PM during the evening rush-hour commute. Witnesses reported that the victim was holding onto a shopping bag that became snagged in the closing train doors.
He was subsequently pulled onto the tracks and run over by the train as it was leaving the station. Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene of the incident to help the victim.
He was reportedly unconscious and unresponsive by the time they arrived before being pronounced deceased at the scene. A full investigation into the circumstances leading up to the deadly accident remains ongoing.
Under New York law, subway operators have a legal obligation to use reasonable care to protect passengers from foreseeable sources of harm. This requires that they routinely inspect and maintain all equipment related to the operation of subway trains. When the MTA has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition on their premises, they must take action. Failing to take action could form the basis of a negligence claim. Courts will examine several factors when determining who could be liable for any subway train accident.
Depending on the unique facts of any case, there could be several sources of liability for any accident involving a New York City subway station. Consider, for example, Berger v. New York City Transit Authority, 232 A.D.3d 532 (2024). That claim involved a woman who was injured after becoming pinned by subway doors as she was exiting the train. Her legal counsel argued that the Transit Authority was negligent for closing the doors on her as she was exiting. They also argued that the automatic reopening feature could’ve been modified to make it more safe.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the man killed in this New York City subway station accident. Any person that may have more information about what occurred should reach out to the authorities. This was a preventable accident that should’ve never taken place.
