MANHATTAN, NEW YORK (June 18, 2026) – An 18-year-old man has tragically died after a horse-drawn carriage went out of control and flipped over near Central Park in Manhattan.
New York City officials are saying that the incident took place on Wednesday afternoon. A horse pulling a carriage became startled and took off down the street before flipping over near West 72nd Street and West Drive.
The carriage flipped over after striking another carriage. Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help all of the victims.
Sadly, the 18-year-old victim died due to the severe nature of his injuries. A full investigation into the cause of the accident remains ongoing at this time.
Speeding remains one of the leading causes of preventable accidents in New York City and across the US. According to the National Safety Council, “Speeding was a factor in 29% of all traffic fatalities in 2024, killing 11,288, or an average of over 31 people on a typical day. A crash is considered speeding-related if the driver was charged with a speeding-related offense or if racing, driving too fast for conditions, or exceeding the posted speed limit was indicated as a contributing factor in the crash.” There are several steps that companies that operate horse-drawn carriages should take to avoid accidents.
De-sensitization: Companies should de-sensitize their horses through various training measures to decrease the likelihood that the horses become startled.
Control: Drivers should maintain strict control of their horses at all times.
Screening: Companies should properly screen all horses that may be used to pull carriages to ensure they have the right temperament.
If a company that operates horse-drawn carriages fails to take reasonable measures to protect its riders, this could form the basis of a liability claim. Unfortunately, the companies that operate horse-drawn carriages will almost never accept responsibility if they are involved in a serious accident. This is why it is so important that these incidents be thoroughly investigated by an outside source.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the man killed in this accident. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the police. This was a preventable tragedy that should have never taken place.
