Male Pedestrian, 87, Killed In Brooklyn MTA Bus Accident

MTA Bus Driver Arrested Following Deadly Collision on East 12th Street

BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (October 31, 2025) – An 87-year-old pedestrian has tragically died in a Brooklyn MTA bus accident on E. 12th St. by Avenue Z.

New York City officials are saying that the accident occurred around 6:40 PM on Thursday. An MTA bus was heading down E. 12th St. when it made a left turn onto Avenue Z.

The bus proceeded to strike the 87-year-old victim in the crosswalk. Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victim.

He was transported to a local hospital with severe injuries to his chest. Sadly, he was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The MTA bus driver involved in the crash has since been arrested.

Liability for Brooklyn MTA Bus Accidents

Many people are killed or seriously injured in MTA bus accidents each year across NYC. According to one report from the New York Post, “At least 2,520 people — or 2.7 per day — were injured [from 2015 – 2018], according to the MTA. At least 14 people died, including a 25-year-old skateboarder, a 62-year-old pedestrian, a 60-year-old motorist and a 70-year-old with a walker who was mutilated by a hit-and-run bus.” Bus drivers are supposed to take certain actions to avoid collisions.

  • Bus drivers should check their blind spots before making turns at intersections.
  • Bus drivers should be well rested before heading out onto the road.
  • Bus drivers should slow down in areas with heavy pedestrian traffic.

Every bus driver in New York is required to obtain a commercial license. These drivers must operate with an abundance of caution to avoid collisions. This necessitates that they slow down and yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian close enough to pose a hazard. If a bus driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of bus accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

Pedestrian accidents involving buses are often highly preventable. They tend to be the result of numerous safety lapses. This can include bus drivers continuing to work, even though they have become dangerously fatigued. It is important for victims of bus accidents to understand they do have legal rights. These rights extend to the surviving family members of any person who has been killed in a bus accident. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
