Girl Dies in East Village Truck Accident

Teenage Cyclist Killed in Accident After Being Hit by Truck at 14^th Street and First Avenue in East Village

EAST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN (September 19, 2026) – A 15-year-old girl has tragically died in an East Village truck accident near the intersection of E. 14th St. and First Avenue.

New York City officials are saying that the accident occurred around 9 PM on Friday night. A 57-year-old man was driving a Peterbilt truck and turning onto First Avenue when he collided with two girls on a bicycle.

The 16-year-old driver of the bicycle was injured and transported to the hospital. Sadly, her 15-year-old passenger did not survive her injuries and was later pronounced deceased at Bellevue Hospital.

The driver of the Peterbilt truck remained at the scene and cooperated with police. A full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deadly collision remains ongoing at this time.

Liability for East Village Truck Accidents

Every person operating a motor vehicle in New York has a legal obligation to use caution to avoid colliding with any pedestrian they encounter. Pursuant to New York Vehicle and Traffic Law § 1146, “every driver of a vehicle shall exercise due care to avoid colliding with any bicyclist, pedestrian, or domestic animal upon any roadway and shall give warning by sounding the horn when necessary.” Truck drivers should take several actions to avoid pedestrians.

• Truck drivers should slow down in areas with dense pedestrian traffic.
• Truck drivers should check their blind spots before making turns.
• Truck drivers should abstain from alcohol and other intoxicating substances.
• Truck drivers should take periodic rest breaks throughout the day to ensure that they are well rested.

When a truck driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with any pedestrian on the roadway, they could be held legally responsible for any resulting injuries. The legal responsibility for any collision involving a commercial truck does not end with the driver involved. Their employer could potentially also be responsible. Under New York law, employers are vicariously liable for the negligent conduct of their workers who were operating within the course and scope of their job duties.
