Gersowitz, Libo & Korek, P.C. Investigates the Shooting at the Bryant Park Ice Skating Rink

An innocent ice skating outing turned tragic for 14-year-old Adonis Mera after Cory Dunton opened fire. Although the case is currently being handled by state prosecutors, the experienced attorneys at Gersowitz, Libo & Korek, P.C. have been retained by the victim’s family to investigate the circumstances leading to the shooting.

The Facts of the Case

On November 9,2013, Dunton opened fire and struck Javier Contreras, after trying to rob his $600 Marmot Mammoth coat. One of the bullets clipped Adonis, who was a bystander and is still unable to move his legs as a result.

Dunton was subsequently arrested for attempted murder and other charges. Dunton, who has six prior arrests, was returned behind bars without bail after his indictment. Although the suspect was grinning and swearing at reporters after his arrest, his demeanor was stone cold as he entered his not-guilty plea in court. If convicted on the charges, Dunton may be sentenced up to 50 years in prison.

Could Proper Security Measures Have Prevented the Shooting?

A proper investigation of the tragic circumstances surrounding Adonis Mera’s  shooting include a thorough examination of prior instances of violence at the skating rink and the actions taken by the skating rink to beef up security to prevent the occurrence of these type of events.  While there is currently no definitive information on hand, the central question is whether any actions on the part of the skating rink could have prevented this tragedy.

Hiring a Personal Injury Attorney to Investigate Criminal Negligence

If you are injured as a result of the criminal acts of another person, you have certain legal rights regardless of whether the individual is ultimately convicted of the crime. In short, victims of a crime can bring a civil case against the person responsible of criminal negligence to obtain compensation for their injuries. A case in point is the O.J. Simpson case. Although O.J. Simpson was found not guilty in his murder trial, he was found guilty in the civil trial. This provided, if nothing else, monetary relief for the victim’s family.

In the case of the shooting at the Bryant Park ice skating rink, the family of the victim, Adonis Mera, has retained the experienced personal injury attorneys at Gersowitz, Libo & Korek, P.C. to investigate the circumstances leading to the shooting and to determine if they are able to successfully bring a civil case against those responsible.
