SALEM COUNTY, NEW JERSEY (January 4, 2026) – Four people have tragically died in a Salem County truck accident on the New Jersey Turnpike by milepost 1.3.

New Jersey State Police are saying that the accident took place around 12:40 AM on the southbound lanes of the freeway. A Mazda SUV with three passengers was involved in a head-on collision with a Dodge pickup truck.

The Mazda was subsequently struck by a tractor-trailer truck following the initial crash. Tragically, four people were killed in the collision.

At least one person suffered serious injuries.

Liability for Salem County Car Accidents

Speeding remains one of the leading causes of preventable car accidents in the United States. Pursuant to NJ Rev Stat § 39:4-98, no person shall operate a motor vehicle at a speed greater than would be reasonable or prudent given the prevailing road conditions. Drivers should take several measures to avoid accidents.

  • Drivers must continuously scan the road ahead of them for hazards.
  • Drivers must slow down during periods of inclement weather or heavy traffic.
  • Drivers must abstain from alcohol and other intoxicating substances.

If a driver fails to slow down to avoid a collision, this could be construed as negligence. In particular, truck drivers are expected to operate with an abundance of caution, given the inherent dangers of operating a commercial vehicle. The family of any person who died in a pedestrian collision may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a wrongful death claim.
