Liability For Long Island DUI Car Accidents

Driver intoxication remains one of the leading causes of car accidents in the United States. According to the National Safety Council, “Alcohol-impaired driving continues to be one of the biggest safety issues on U.S. roads. In 2022, 13,524 people were killed in alcohol-impaired crashes, a decrease of 0.7% after two consecutive years of increases.” Even small amounts of alcohol can dramatically reduce a person’s ability to drive safely.

  • Intoxicated drivers are less able to stay in a single lane of traffic.
  • Intoxicated drivers have delayed reaction times.
  • Intoxicated drivers have difficulty judging the distance between objects.

It is illegal for any driver to operate a motor vehicle with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.08% or higher. What many people do not realize is that a variety of substances could potentially intoxicate them besides alcohol, including prescription drugs. If a driver causes a collision while intoxicated, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of DUI accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Organ damage
  • Death

DUI collisions are entirely preventable. In fact, by the time a drunk driver crashes, they will often have driven intoxicated dozens of times before they are eventually caught. It is important that victims of DUI collisions understand that they do have rights. Any person who is injured due to the negligent actions of a drunk driver may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim.
