Liability For Upper East Side MTA Bus Accidents

Far too many people are seriously injured in MTA bus collisions every year. According to one report from the New York Post, “At least 2,520 people — or 2.7 per day — were injured [from 2015 – 2018], according to the MTA. At least 14 people died, including a 25-year-old skateboarder, a 62-year-old pedestrian, a 60-year-old motorist and a 70-year-old with a walker who was mutilated by a hit-and-run bus.” There are a number of common causes of MTA bus accidents.

  • Speeding remains one of the most common causes of bus accidents.
  • Buses have large blind spots, and bus drivers may hit pedestrians or vehicles while making left turns.
  • Buses weigh much more than passenger vehicles and are substantially more difficult to stop.

Bus companies are considered common carriers and are held to a high standard in terms of safety. Drivers must use the utmost caution in order to avoid hitting pedestrians and other vehicles. If a bus driver fails to slow down in order to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of bus accidents often suffer very serious injuries.

  • Lacerations
  • Organ damage
  • Head trauma
  • Soft tissue damage

Many of the injuries associated with bus accidents are not immediately obvious. For example, it is common for victims of bus accidents to suffer post traumatic stress disorder. Accident victims may also suffer internal injuries. Any person injured in a bus accident may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A bus accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
