Gravesend Car Accident Involved Two Police Officers in Police Cruiser

GRAVESEND, NEW YORK (June 22, 2025) – At least four people were injured in a Gravesend car accident involving a police cruiser on Coney Island Avenue.

New York City officials are saying that the accident took place around 2 AM on Sunday. A Chevy van was involved in a collision with a Volvo.

At least one of those two vehicles ended up hitting a police cruiser. Paramedics were called to the scene of the collision to help the victims.

Two people were taken to the hospital. At least one of the victims was listed in critical condition.

A full investigation into the collision remains ongoing.

Liability for New York City Police Accidents

Emergency vehicles are involved in many serious injury collisions each year. According to the National Safety Council, “In 2023, 198 people died in crashes involving emergency vehicles. More than half of these deaths were occupants of non-emergency vehicles (57%). Deaths among pedestrians accounted for 23% of the total, while emergency vehicle drivers represented 11%, and emergency vehicle passengers accounted for about 7% of the deaths.” There are numerous factors that may contribute to a car accident.

  • Car accidents are substantially more likely when drivers are speeding.
  • Car accidents tend to take place at intersections.
  • Car accidents are much more likely at night and during times of reduced visibility.

All drivers have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid colliding with other vehicles. This may necessitate that they slow down well below the stated speed limit. If a driver fails to slow down to avoid colliding with another vehicle in the roadway, they could be held at fault through a civil claim. It is important that certain steps be taken after any car accident.

  • Surveillance footage that may have captured the accident should be sought.
  • Eyewitnesses should be interviewed.
  • Photos of the accident site should be taken.
  • An experienced personal injury attorney should be contacted.

It is possible that a police department could be liable for any collision involving their officers. Police departments tend to have a great deal of immunity in the event of a car accident if officers are responding to an actual emergency with their lights on. However, even in an emergency situation, police officers must not act with a reckless disregard for the safety of the public. Any person injured in a collision with a police vehicle may be able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
