New York City Police Looking For Hit-And-Run Driver That Killed Elderly Bronx Pedestrian Near Pitusa Bakery
BRONX, NEW YORK (June 20, 2024) – An 82-year-old man has tragically died in a Bronx hit-and-run car accident along Southern Boulevard in Longwood.
New York City police officials are saying that the collision took place around 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday. A pedestrian just bought a pastry and was crossing Southern Boulevard when they were hit by a vehicle.
Firefighters and paramedics were called to the scene in order to help the victim. Despite life-saving measures, he later died due to the severity of his injuries.
The driver involved in the crash fled the scene. Authorities believe the vehicle was a Chrysler 300.
Hit-and-run collisions are very common across New York and the United States. According to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety, “In 2016, there were 1,980 fatal hit-and-run crashes resulting in 2,049 fatalities. This is the highest annual number of hit- and-run fatalities or crashes recorded since NHTSA began compiling statistics on fatal motor vehicle crashes in 1975.” There are a number of factors that could contribute to a pedestrian collision.
All drivers have a legal obligation to take measures in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. Pursuant to New York Vehicle Code 1146, all drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians, bicyclists, and domestic animals in the roadway. If a driver fails to slow down in order to avoid hitting a pedestrian, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of pedestrian accidents often suffer very serious injuries.
The vast majority of pedestrian accidents are preventable. This is particularly true when pedestrians are injured in hit-and-runs. It is very common for hit-and-runs to involve drivers who are simply not paying attention to the road ahead of them. The family of any person who died in a hit-and-run collision may have legal recourse through a civil claim. A wrongful death attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
We at Gersowitz Libo & Korek, P.C. extend our deepest condolences to the family of the man who died in this collision. Any person who may have more information about what happened should reach out to the NYPD. This was a preventable tragedy that should have never taken place.
