Lexus RX 350 Reportedly Drove Onto Sidewalk Before Hitting Victim in East Flatbush
EAST FLATBUSH, NEW YORK (July 22, 2026) – A 79-year-old woman has tragically died in an East Flatbush pedestrian accident along Rutland Road.
New York City officials are saying that the incident occurred around 1:30 PM on Friday afternoon. The driver of an RX 350 was making a right turn when they struck a sign and reportedly went onto a sidewalk.
That vehicle kept going until it hit the 79-year-old woman walking on the sidewalk. Witnesses reported that the driver of the SUV may have been speeding prior to the crash.
Paramedics were called to the scene to help the injured woman. She was transported to a local hospital to receive treatment.
Unfortunately, she was later pronounced dead at the hospital.
Pedestrians lack the protections supported by enclosed vehicles and are highly susceptible to being seriously injured or killed in collisions. According to the Governors Highway Safety Association, “Drivers struck and killed 7,148 people walking in the United States in 2024, down 4.3% from the year before and the second annual decline, but nearly 20% higher than the 2016 level.” Drivers should take multiple actions to avoid hitting pedestrians.
If a driver fails to slow down to avoid hitting any pedestrian, this could serve as evidence of negligence. There is a presumption of negligence on the part of any driver that goes onto a sidewalk before hitting a pedestrian. These types of collisions necessarily always involve drivers that are speeding or distracted. The family of any person who died in a pedestrian accident is able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil action.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the woman killed in this crash. This was a preventable crash that should not have taken place. Any person with more information should reach out to the NYPD.
