Investigation Underway After Man Died After Slipping on Icy Roof at Brooklyn Apartment Building
BROOKLYN, NEW YORK (April 28, 2026) – An 81-year-old man has tragically died after slipping and falling on the roof at his Brooklyn apartment building.
New York City officials are saying that the incident took place on a Sunday. The man was crossing an icy roof when he reportedly slipped.
He used the roof to cross because the elevator in the building was chronically broken. Paramedics were called to the scene of the accident to help the victim.
Sadly, he was later pronounced dead. A full investigation remains ongoing at this time.
Property owners in New York have a legal obligation to maintain their premises in a reasonably safe condition. This necessitates that they abide by all building and fire codes. Properties should be free of all obvious tripping hazards. This is particularly important during the winter months when ice can accumulate. Property owners should take several measures to prevent slip and falls.
When a property owner has actual or constructive notice of a dangerous condition on their premises, they must take action. Failing to take action to correct a dangerous condition could form the basis of a negligence claim. According to USA Today, “Across the U.S. each year, an estimated 1 million people are injured from slipping on ice and snow, leading to serious issues like broken bones and head injuries, with around 17,000 of these falls proving fatal.” The family of any person who died in a slip-and-fall accident may be able to pursue some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
We at GLK Law extend our deepest condolences to the family of the man who died in this accident. Any person who may have more information should reach out to the police. There needs to be a thorough investigation into what went wrong.
