Liability for Staten Island Car Accidents

Car accidents seriously injure or kill many people each year. According to the National Security Council, “Between 1913 and 2022 motor-vehicle deaths per 10,000 registered vehicles decreased 95%, from 33 to 1.50, respectively. In 1913, only 1.3 million vehicles were registered, and 4,200 people died on the road. In 2022, 283 million vehicles were registered, and 46,027 people died on the road.” Drivers should take several steps in order to avoid collisions.

  • Drivers should ensure that their vehicles are routinely inspected and well maintained.
  • Drivers should be well rested before heading out onto the road.
  • Drivers should abstain from alcohol and other intoxicating substances.
  • Drivers should check their blind spots before making turns.

All drivers must exercise due care in order to avoid collisions. People who operate commercial vehicles must be especially cautious. Speeding remains one of the leading causes of collisions. If a driver fails to slow down in order to avoid a collision, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. It is important to determine the factors that may contribute to a crash.

  • Improper vehicle maintenance may have caused the brakes on a vehicle to go out.
  • The speed at which a driver was traveling may have played a role in a crash.
  • Unsafe turns are another major factor that could lead to a collision.

The aftermath of a collision can be very confusing. In many cases, victims may not realize the full extent of their injuries. The adrenaline that people experience following a crash can easily mask internal injuries. It is important that accident victims understand that they do have rights. They are able to seek some measure of accountability through a civil claim.
