Liability For Brooklyn MTA Bus Accidents

MTA buses are involved in a high number of serious injury collisions every year in New York City. According to one report from the New York Post, “At least 2,520 people — or 2.7 per day — were injured [from 2015 – 2018], according to the MTA. At least 14 people died, including a 25-year-old skateboarder, a 62-year-old pedestrian, a 60-year-old motorist and a 70-year-old with a walker who was mutilated by a hit-and-run bus.” MTA officials should take a number of measures in order to avoid collisions.

  • MTA drivers should be well-trained on how to handle their vehicles.
  • MTA buses should be regularly inspected and maintained.
  • MTA bus routes should avoid as many left turns as possible.

Bus companies have a legal obligation to exercise due care in order to avoid hitting pedestrians. This is particularly true when bus drivers are making turns. Buses have naturally large blind spots that may obscure the presence of pedestrians in the roadway. If a bus driver turns into the path of a scooter rider, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. Victims of bus accidents tend to suffer very serious injuries.

  • Broken bones
  • Head injuries
  • Lacerations
  • Spinal cord injuries

Bus accidents are often highly preventable. They tend to involve bus drivers that are failing to adhere to safety standards. This could include bus drivers who are speeding. Any person injured in an MTA bus collision may be able to seek some measure of justice through a civil claim. A New York City MTA bus accident attorney can examine all of the unique facts of your case and let you know what your legal options are.
