Cyclosporiasis Outbreak in Suffolk County May Be Linked to Contaminated Produce
SUFFOLK COUNTY, CALIFORNIA (July 17, 2026) – An outbreak of cyclosporiasis has sickened over 60 people across Suffolk County, as Long Island is also contending with an outbreak of Legionnaires’ disease.
Suffolk County officials are saying that the number of cases has continued to grow. Cyclosporiasis is a type of parasite that causes people to have painful diarrhea.
Infections can last for well over a month. Cyclosporiasis is usually contracted by eating some type of produce that is contaminated.
However, the source of the contamination in this case has not yet been determined. Health officials are recommending that residents wash their hands thoroughly with soap and water before and after handling any type of produce.
A full investigation remains ongoing.
Foodborne illnesses remain quite common and sicken many people each year. According to the FDA, “The Federal government estimates that there are about 48 million cases of foodborne illness annually — the equivalent of sickening 1 in 6 Americans each year.” Companies that sell or manufacture produce have a legal obligation to ensure that that produce is reasonably safe. They must take certain measures to protect consumers from foodborne illnesses.
When a company fails to take reasonable measures to prevent foodborne illnesses, this could form the basis of a negligence claim. There could be several potential sources of liability for any foodborne illness. This includes a restaurant that may have failed to properly clean produce or other items. Victims of foodborne illnesses are protected by a number of laws. They’re able to seek some measure of accountability through a personal injury claim.
We at GLK Law extend our best wishes to all of the people injured in this cyclosporiasis outbreak. It is our sincere hope that all of the victims will be able to make a full recovery. Any person that may have more information on the source of the outbreak should reach out to the health department.
